family time

The Web-Enabled Mom

Well, it happened. My son, Trevor Christian, was born on January 19, 2000. At this writing, he is six weeks old and the cutest thing I have ever seen in my life. He was a big boy, eight pounds, ten ounces and I, being the “yuppie overachiever” I mentioned last issue, pushed him out sans medication after three hours of labor. Since his arrival, I have had very little sleep and even less time to myself. As I told my mother, these first weeks are more difficult than the actual labor, trying to take care of yourself, the child, and continue to have some semblance of the life you led before. So you can see why taking a vacation (or at least dreaming about it) is high on my list. After a little web research, here are some top sites that offer the new kind of vacation I’ll be planning: a family one!

travelwithkids.about.com/travel/travelwithkids: This page is chock full of info about places to go with kids: resorts, bed and breakfasts, and all kinds of family vacations, plus a section of specific vacation spots and kid-specific ideas.

family.go.com/categories/travel: New travel deals every month, trip planning by location or type of vacation, traveling checklists and road-tested vacation reviews. Also linked to Disney.com.

gorp.com/gorp/eclectic/family.htm: GORP stands for “Great Outdoor Recreation Pages”. Offering a newsletter, reviews and advice, this site has lots of great ideas for not-so-ordinary vacations, including an African safari and rock-climbing.

pathfinder.com/travel/klutz: Pathfinder provides different games to keep the kiddies (and you) busy in the car on long drives. Print out the pages and bring them along with you!

disney.go.com/home/channels/vacations/flash: Disney lists all the available Disney resorts and cruises including Florida, California, Tokyo, and Paris. Book your vacation on-line! Buy your tickets to Disneyworld now and forget the lines when you get there. Site includes the Disney Institute in Florida, that offers Camp Disney (youth programs) for 7 to 15 year olds.
